Novel Molecular Approaches for Advancing Prediction and Mitigation of Disease Outbreaks in Aquaculture for Small Scale Farmers

Our project brings together an international consortium of biologists, social scientists, policy experts and NGOs from the UK, India, Bangladesh and Malawi. Together we seek to develop and apply innovative molecular methods for use as early warning tools to help prevent disease outbreaks in aquaculture - focusing on low income, food-deficit countries. The ability to predict disease outbreaks will allow farmers to harvest their fish before disease onset and thus prevent major crop losses. This will increase crop productivity and, in turn, the health, well-being and profitability of small-scale farmers.

Our central theme is development of resilient aquaculture and the fostering of partnerships between farmers, Aquatic Health Professionals, researchers and national Competent Authorities to aid the prevention of disease.
